71: Into the Fire - (review)

The movie 71: Into the Fire is a claustrophobic and gripping movie that explores the early years of the Korean War. The film is a recollection of the sacrifice and hardiness of young soldiers who found themselves in the mess of war. The first scenes of the movie make it obvious that it is not going to be afraid of the ugly truths of the war, and it is the truthfulness that makes the experience that terrifying.

The story has its basis in a true story, and it is centred around student-soldiers who have been tasked with the responsibility of defending a middle school. It is a heartpounding, heartbreaking story that switches between periods of intense action with silent, emotional strains. Sacrifice, friendship, the undefeated spirit of the fighters who struggle against better forces are the themes that are intertwined in the story. The personal cost of war is not evaded in the film, and as such it is a touching commentary on what war takes away.

The tone of the film is gloomy, yet there is hope in it. The characters never surrender regardless of the insurmountable odds. Their fighting spirit is highly motivational and this spirit is what causes the film to be so influential. The filmmaking is also breathtaking and captures the anarchy and devastation of war. The score is also very effective and it contributes to the emotional aspect of the movie. Altogether, the shortage 71: Into the Fire is an excellent homage to the victims of the young soldiers and the heartfelt contemplation of the price of war.
