Trigger S01 - (review)

Trigger S01 is a tense and provocative show that delves into the mess created in South Korea when illegal gun suddenly swamp into a society with zero gun related crime. Even in the very first scenes I was impressed by the description of a weak societal order that was disintegrating and this was a very terrifying scene of doubt and threat. The show does a remarkable job of balancing the action of high stakes with a moment of self examination, keeping the audience glued to a world that is about to go off the rail.

The story revolves around two opposite characters Lee Do who is a serious and upright detective with a background of a military sniper and Moon Baek who is an arms dealer with unclear motives. Their relationship is the emotional heart of the series, which makes one start thinking about the notions of morality and how people react differently to violence and lawlessness. The series is doing well in visual storytelling, gritty cinematography and detailed production design, which illustrates the shady secret life of illegal arms trade vividly. The tense narrative and crashing shots enhance the tension and keep the audience entertained yet giving space to the emotional level.

The most resonant part of me was the way that “Trigger” explores the thin veil of peace and the cost of violence to people in society. It brought about emotion of anxiety and vulnerability and made me think of how narrow the boundary is between order and chaos. Although certain plotlines could be considered predictable, the serial, in general, is a morally intricate and captivating story that does not leave easily after watching. In the end, the Trigger is an impactful portrayal of the society that was driven to the extreme and people who found themselves in the middle of the battle that made one wonder about justice, morality and strength.
