Back to the Past is a bold mixture of sci-fi, historical drama, and action that focuses on the great repercussions of playing with the past. The premise of the movie plays with an alluring plot turn the movie, which starts from personal vengeance and ends into a sophisticated discussion on morality of changing history. The storyline is centered on Ken, a man who was wrongly imprisoned due to the crime he did not commit and become obsessed with changing his history by overthrown the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Rarely has visual and thematic ambition worked as effectively as in the sequences of time travel in the film, as the contemporary weaponry meets the old armies and strikes a highly striking contrast between times, as exciting as it is eye-opening.
The acting assists in bringing down this epic space-bound entity, most notably Hong Siu-lung, the character whose refusal to engage in the time travel game is what gives his character a sense of poignancy, a sense of moral intricacy. The conflict intensifies because of the changing of allies and confusion of identity both literally and figuratively as Ken and his associates masquerade as the emperor resulting in scenes of deceit and disorder that questions the ideas of authenticity and authoritative powers. The atmosphere of the film swings between epic spectacle and emotional introspection, and scenes of silent self-reflection are juxtaposed with the scenes of hot and bloody conflicts. This mood is also supplemented by the score and production design, which makes the viewers plunge in both the ancient and modern worlds.
What particularly touched my heart was the cogitation of the frailty of history and the unplanned results of hubris, which the movie engages in. The tragic conclusion, the despair and sacrifice of Ken, is as an eye opener that tampering with the future is dangerous and can potentially destroy the very fabric of the reality. I was left considering the ethical aspects of power, responsibility, and the inability to reverse the past, which makes Back to the Past a thought-provoking adventure that is hard to forget even long after one finishes watching the credits.
