With the sea village as a backdrop, the story begins just before a big celebration when a holy treasure – a rare ambergris – is stolen and this leads to a comic but dangerous chase. Tam and Tuan, brothers grappling with the poverty, join a ragtime group of friends to recover the stolen relic and get into a series of comic misfortunes and adrenaline-charged battles.
The movie has a great balance in the martial arts action and timing of comedy, which sets every pursuit chase as a thriller and a comedy at the same time. The friendship and strength of the characters is evident when they have to confront brutal fishermen gangs, smugglers, and rival groups that want to possess the precious floating gold. On their journey, they are helped on their quest by some unlikely allies but a cunning fish peddler and a naughty impostor, who bring a touch of humour and warmth to the story. There is a perfect balance between action and comedy, which sets an energetic mood that keeps the audience glued towards the end.
The most striking was the fact that the film was a glorification of community and cultural values where the focus was on unity, perseverance and the need to preserve ones heritage. The colourful backdrop, the martial arts full of spirit, humour and sincere moments make Chase for Amber a genuinely uplifting adventure that leaves a smile on your face. It is a pleasant surprise that in all the mess, family and friendship could win, making it a pleasant and unforgettable watch.
