Eternals - (review)

Beautifully shot and having a profoundly ambitious theme, Eternals is a film that adds to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its own unique arguably ancient origins of a race of immortal beings who have covertly been shaping human history throughout thousands of years. The movie explores obscure ideas of responsibility, free will, and moral relativity, questioning the idea of unquestioning devotion to authority. The novel traces the adventures of these people with their different powers as they bring together to fight against their ancient foes, the Deviants, and confront the coming destruction of the earth because of the awakening of the heavens. The story of the world is balanced between the cosmic and the personal dilemma, which produces a profound and philosophical effect.

The mood of the movie is between epic and calm meditation, and the poetic direction of Chloe Zhao puts a strong focus not only on the portrayal of the emotions but also on the visuals that may be regarded as a film masterpiece. The cinematography both fills me with awe over the cosmic grandeur as well as focuses on the smallest details of human beings and the music plays a subtle role of highlighting the internal struggle of characters. The actors are emotive and particularly Sersi played by Gemma Chan and Thena played by Angelina Jolie, who are emotionally satisfying in their respective missions in life, lend poignancy to the bigger questions of the movie. Its slow-paced rhythm gives the film time to reflect, although it may seem rather dense and slow at times, especially because of its abundant lore and philosophical discourse.

The part that touched me the most was the discussion of the issue of moral agency in the film, the possibility of blind obedience being justified or the necessity of people making their own decisions. The internal struggles of the characters concerning their loyalty, love and sacrifice cause empathy and introspection. Although I had a difficult time with some of the narrative, I felt in awe of and able to look into purpose and morality after viewing Eternals. It is a confident, visual spectacular movie that makes people think about the real essence of heroism and the strength of the choice.
