Ghost Killer is a very compelling supernatural action movie that covers the theme of justice and redemption as well as inner conflict. The novel is about a young college girl Fumika Matsuoka, who finds a strange bullet on the road, and this makes her possessed by the ghost of Kudo, a vicious hitman who was killed and who could not rest, and would only rest when he accomplished his task. When the spirit of Kudo enters her body, Fumika becomes capable of physical powers and they both go forth to complete his unfinished business. The movie skillfully incorporates supernaturalism with a touch of realism and the tension created is powerful enough to ensure that the viewers stay glued to the film till the end.
The movie is very emotional and well-rounded. The inner conflict between Fumika and her stressful life and new abilities also contributes to the vulnerable and complex nature of the situation. Her shifting affair with Kudo, a spirit who is filled with anger and remorse, develops an intriguing dynamic that brings the story out of a usual revenge. Moody cinematography, good use of lighting as well as well-choreographed action sequences make Ghost Killer visually striking and increases the tension. Sound and sound design go hand in hand with the visuals as it enhances moments of suspense and emotional appeal.
The most touching aspect is the contemplation of the film upon the human need to find peace and closure in the midst of the lawlessness. The experience of Fumika is exciting and sad and viewers must wonder how far they can go to face their demons- be it living or dead. Although a bit more development could have been done on the character back stories, the overall impression that comes out of Ghost Killer is a visceral, emotionally charged experience that is going to be difficult to forget as it helps us remember that occasionally, the ghosts that we are running are the ones inside of us.
