Lethal Seduction - (review)

Lethal Seduction is a dramatic, anxious, psychological thriller that explores the hazardous nature of control and addiction. The novel is an account of a high school senior, Mark, who is about to go to Princeton when he meets the alluring widow, Carissa. Their one-night affair soon develops into a manipulative affair as Carissa has a strong influence on him. The film addresses the questions of vulnerability, trust, and destructive power of seduction as Mark is more and more involved into her web. The story reflects the appalling transformation of a simple young man to the one between two strong and opposing women, the mother who wants to keep her child safe and the stranger who threatens his life.

The tone of the film is atmospheric, and it is based on a low level of tension and feeling intricacies. The acting is effective, particularly in the way it depicts psychological tension, which is the naivety and confusion of Mark, the manipulative nature of Carissa, and the unquestioning motherly fears of Tanya. Direction and cinematography support this mood, applying shadows, close-ups, low-key colors in order to create a feeling of a bad omen. Its score is an addition to the suspense, as it creates a feeling of discomfort in the narrative. The most striking is the discussion of how easily trust may be abused and the disastrous consequences of manipulation towards weak people.

Despite the fact that in Lethal Seduction, the atmosphere of haunting and thoughtfulness is achieved, sometimes the movie is marred with pacing and not so much unexpected twists. However, its emotional effect is strong, causing one to think about limits, power, and the negative aspect of human psychology. On the whole, it is an ominous but impressive movie, as it makes a strong impression on the audience by reminding them of the fact that the boundary between what is innocent and what is dangerous is very thin, and when crossed, it can lead to the most disastrous consequences.
