AGASOBANUYE LIVE

Mom - (review)

Mom is a thriller that is emotionally charged and gripping and addresses the dark aspects of justice, revenge and a motherly love. The movie is about Devaki, a zealous biology teacher who is devastated when her stepdaughter Arya is violently raped and murdered. Regardless of how hard she tries to get justice in the legal system, the case falls apart because of lack of evidence, Arya is left devastated and disconnected. Such injustice contributes to the fact that Devaki goes on a path to vigilante violence after she takes things into her hands and carefully plans and kills every one of the attackers of Arya. The unpolished depiction of her changing into an unstoppable retaliator of the mother in the film is an exploration of the boundaries of morals under the impression of the impossibility to find justice.

Performances are strong, particularly, the role of Devaki whose desperation and heavy sorrow make the story go. The movie is filled with suspenseful twists in the plot, be it covert missions, fight against violent criminals, and every onslaught of attack tells more about the rotten and shattered justice system. The direction skillfully balances moments of emotional vulnerability with brutal action, creating a visceral experience that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. Dark and gritty cinematography and haunting score enhance the tense mood of the movie, taking the audience into the risky journey of Devaki in her quest of revenge.

The most resonant thing is the discussion of the unbending love of the mother and the ethical issues which arise when one has to move beyond the moral law to act in the name of justice. The movie made me wonder the depth of sacrifices that parents make in the name of keeping their children safe even to the extent of entering into the shadows. The moral ambiguity and emotional climax in the final act highlights the tragic price of revenge and the perennial strength of motherhood. Mom is a mind-bending, harsh thriller which makes the audience question what justice really is and how much a mother can love.
