Prisoner S01 - (review)

“Prisoner” Season 1 is a gripping, adrenaline-fueled espionage thriller that delves into the perilous world of organized crime, betrayal, and moral ambiguity. The series is about Amber Todd, a dedicated prison guard who is ordered to take Tibor Stone, a former hitman, to testify against a notorious prison boss. In the course of their adventure, they are subjected to constant attacks, drone strikes, and double-crosses, uncovering a network of corruption among the law enforcement and crime syndicates. The story line is well paced, handling tense moments with the same psychological penetration as moments of calm, exploring the developing relationship between Amber and Tibor as they learn to trust and survive with each other, and to confront their own histories of trauma. The fast-paced nature and the complex plot twists of the show keep the audience guessing, making them think about issues of loyalty and justice.

The characters are well-developed, and have shades of moral complexity that question conventional definitions of good and bad. Amber is portrayed as being resilient and compassionate, but her choices are becoming more and more morally difficult as she is drawn further into a game he plays into that sees loyalties twist and turn dangerously. Tibor (real name: Étienne) is haunted by guilt, survival and a quest for redemption. The series also highlights the corruption of the National Crime Unit, with a mole present within the ranks, as well as corrupt members of the police ready to do everything for the sake of power and money. The direction and cinematography further build up the gritty, noir aesthetic and the score adds to the emotional stakes, placing viewers in a world where alliances are fragile and choices can prove fatal.

The thing that really struck me was how the grungy morality of a series and the price of war and betrayal were so real and starkly brought to life. The characters’ traumatic pasts and complicated motivations lead the viewer into empathy for the characters, thereby making their struggles seem personal and immediate. The series sticks with the viewer, creating a sense of a world in which justice is elusive, and survival is often dependent upon questionable decisions. In the end, “Prisoner” is a powerful and inspiring look at resilience in the face of chaos, and the story is one that suggests, in a corrupt system, there is room for courageous and principled individuals to rise to the occasion, and for those without those values to question what it means to be loyal, honest, or brave.
