Rurouni Kenshin Part I: Origins - (review)

Rurouni Kenshin Part I: Origins is a strong work on the concept of redemption against the background of the stormy period of transitioning Japan out of its samurai period in the modern world. The movie presents Kenshin Himura who is an ex-assassin but is plagued by his violent history and he has declared never to kill anyone again. In his quest, we come across a man who struggles with the inner devil trying to save those in need with a tender yet an indomitable determination. The mood of the film is realistic with elements of poetic beauty, the film conveys the emotional load of Kenshin vow and the mental issues that are on the verge of destroying him.

The movie is visually spectacular, and the cinematography has brought to life the image of the messiness of post-war Japan and stillness of its quiet side. Fight scenes are carefully choreographed, with the focus on the beauty of the battle and cruelty of martial arts and the special reverse-edged sword of Kenshin. The score provides a little underlining to the emotional scene, making the scenes of tension and introspection much higher. The supporting actors such as the idealistic Kaoru and the fiery Sanosuke are part of the story to add the element of faithfulness and conflicting points of view that make the story a dynamic narrative of hope, friendship, and endurance.

Most of all, it was the very theme of the movie redemption as the film emphasizes how even the darkest past can be forgiven and a new way could be found. The inner struggle and determination of Kenshin not to kill but to save those he did an impression and gave hope to people in the middle of the chaos. Although some of the characters might have been further developed, the emotional nature of the film and its potent narration can be deemed a heartfelt ode to the power of empathy and the bravery to make a difference. It is a very well-woven movie that evokes the heart and makes a strong impression.
