Shooter S02 - (review)

Season 2 of Shooter changes its approach to legal exoneration of Bob Lee Swagger and a massive conspiracy that entails the world that Swagger and his former Marine unit, 8113. Bob Lee and Julie start off the season by going to Germany to reunite with his old squad, only to come to a hideout where they are caught in a murderous ambush that only exposed a professional assassin, Solotov, who is killing them one by one. Flashbacks of a 2012 CIA-related operation in Afghanistan enhance the plot, as they reveal dark secrets of heroin trafficking and black assets, which currently turn the unit into a target. This disclosure brings about an element of personal backstory and ethical gray area, which increases the stakes and makes Bob Lee more desperate in his quest to find justice.

The show is brilliantly done, balancing action and emotion. The fact that Julie is struggling with PTSD on a regular basis gives a heartfelt contrast to the continuous stream of violence, which shows how their relationship is taking a toll on her. FBI Agent Nadine Memphis, Isaac Johnson at the same time learn that Atlas is an underground organization that is controlling what happens in the world without their notice. The friendship between Bob Lee and Isaac though strained in their history brings out themes of loyalty and survival in the world that is dangerous and unpredictable. The Mexican prison break scene is one of the examples of the kinetic direction and close cut used in the season that leaves the viewers sitting at the edges of their seat.

Finally, the second season of the series titled Shooter features difficult issues of allegiance, confidentiality, and the human price of justice. It is an emotionally charged, stressful ride that pushes its characters to the moral limits and gives a thrilling action and suspense. I felt deeply caught up by the mix of gritty realism, subtle performances, and multiple layers of storytelling in the season, which I could relate to because of its exploration of the theme of how sins of the past and secrets of the truth can affect the present. It is a very dramatic, thought-provoking extension that makes the series more than espionage.
