The first season of the series The Legend of Heroes is a more personalized adaptation of the old-familiar wuxia world of Jin Yong that is translated into reality very well by Tencent. The series begins with a sunny image of a martial arts world that has been rediscovered by a new tradition, that is filled with thrilling episodes of fights and profound narration. It is basically a tragic tale of two kid best friends, Guo Jing and Yang Kang whose lives would never be the same again by the upheaval that is happening around them and the betrayal of their families. The environment of the late Song Dynasty where the story is set with the problems of honor, loyalty, and betrayal is involved and the problem development of a complex story of love, revenge and identity.
It is interesting acting and the scenes of uncompromising integrity of Guo Jing and ambivalence of Yang Kang with his more than darker intentions are impressive. The fact that they are on different paths due to righteousness and the need to survive adds a certain level of depth and tension to the series. The fact that Huang Rong character is a very lively person also makes the story somewhat appealing and adds some warmth and laughter to the story besides driving the plot. Direction is superb in striking the right balance between martial arts choreography and character scenes that not only render the scene with the glory of the battles but also the pettiness of the inner struggle.
The most striking one was the manner in which the series explored personal choices and circumstances that determine the fate. The sense of nostalgic reverence is also developed because of the use of green cinematography and the classic martial arts, and the modern narrative style makes the old legend receive a new image. The Legend of Heroes has at last tempted me with its fusion of action, emotion, and cultural affluence that makes it quite an interesting re-telling of an ancient legend that does not disregard its traditions and provides a fresh avenue of telling martial arts stories to the generations of its telling.
