The Passion of the Christ is a very intense and visceral depiction of the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, in which the brutality and intense spiritual meaning of the crucifixion are captured. The movie begins in the Garden of Olives, where Jesus is praying serenely, when he is betrayed and a nightmare of betrayal, injustice, and unalterable faith commences. The director is not afraid to focus on the physical suffering that Jesus undergoes; floggings, scourging, the crucifixion itself, are all used to create a strong emotional impact and make the audience realize the severity of the sacrifice Jesus had to make. The harsh and unforgiving reality and imagery that the movie employs are intended to make the viewer plunge into the pain and hopelessness of those last few moments, and it is a very touching and, sometimes, painful experience.
In addition to its graphic image of the suffering of Jesus, the movie examines the issues of betrayal, redemption, and sacrifice of God. Compounded portrayals of Judas, Peter, and Pontius Pilate contribute to moral ambiguity and human frailty emphasizing the conflicts between the sense of duty, fear, and faith. The poignant moments between Jesus and her mother Mary and the moments of forgiveness and salvation that Jesus gives even in agony are further intensifying the emotional core. The visual and auditory impact of the film, rough lighting, the use of haunting sound design, enhance the spiritual emotional impact of the storyline, making the film a visceral experience that reaches deep into the soul of the spectator.
What impressed me most of all was the manner in which The Passion of the Christ makes one feel anguished, reverent, and reflective at the same time. It is not just a narration of the historical events but it is a spiritual journey that places before the viewer the immense price of sacrifice and the self-sustaining strength of faith. Although its visual material might be overwhelming, it ends up making the viewer appreciate more the themes of redemption and divine love. It is a movie that makes an impression which makes us ponder on pain and hope which are the core of this eternal tale.
