The White Storm 2: Drug Lords - (review)

The White Storm 2: Drug Lords is an intense crime thriller that touches upon the issues of redemption, revenge, and moral ambiguity in the world of crime in Hong Kong. Yu Nam, a former triad member who has already become a billionaire and a philanthropist, gets determined to eliminate the drug trade when he sees his former girlfriend son overdosing and dying. His change as a brutal figure of crime to the man of personal tragedy gives the story an emotional touch. On the other hand, Jizo, who was the right hand man to Yu, is now one of the most infamous drug lords in the city, a cold-blooded cunning pragmatist of the grey. Their dark histories preconditioned a dramatic clash with their personal revenge and the confrontation between the society. The movie creatively juggles between the action-packed scenes and the scenes of emotional contemplation, creating an impressive picture of the vicious cycle of crime and the way to escape it.

The movie has its strengths as its characters are complex and have multifaceted narration. The low-key, but strong, performance of Andy Lau as Yu Nam creates a man who is in tornado between his past and the urge to do good. The story runs across a decade and it shows how their destinies are determined by loss at personal level and by corruption within the society. The action scenes are gritty and perfectly done to highlight the harsh reality of drug trade in Hong Kong. The movie has a very good rhythm and has kept the viewer in suspense as moral issues arise and the movie climax has offered a dramatic ending which makes the viewer wonder what justice really means. The shooting and music add to the realistic effect and pulls the viewers into the dark and moralistically ambiguous world.

Finally, the White Storm 2 really impressed me with its way of revealing how one can use the personal tragedy as the catalyst in both destructive and redemptive journeys. It makes the people watch it in order to think of the real meaning of justice and whether there is any chance of real peace in the middle of the mess. It is an emotionally charged, yet intensely action-driven and morally ambiguous story that will offer a strong and thought-provoking contribution to the crime genre in Hong Kong. It is a movie that sticks with you even after the credits run, which makes one think of the price of vengeance and whether it can be redeemed.
