As Chen Zhen manages his way through the mess of the surrounding world, which is full of political instability, personal conflicts, and tragedy, the movie is a wonderful example of how a hero could be created out of the most unheroic people.
The visual aspect of the film takes the viewers to the world of the late Qing Shanghai with its lush period details, bright street scenes, and authentic costume design that helps to create the atmosphere of the period. The camera work has a way of capturing the sheer magnitude of the city as well as the internal struggle of the main character to produce a layered narrative of the images. The acting is sincere, particularly in terms of the transformation of Chen Zhen, a tiny person into a strong leader. The score is an incredible fit to the story, incorporating classical Chinese instruments with a dramatic score that highlights the good and bad moments of the story of Chen Zhen. It has a very balanced pacing, which provides both a moment of introspection and action and conflict, thus, making the story interesting to maintain the start to finish flow.
The most interesting piece to me was the depiction of endurance and optimism in place of disorder. The story of Chen Zhen represents the universal idea that greatness is usually created when faced with adversity, causing the audience to consider whether they are able to persevere. I was moved by the fact that the film has shown me that young man must face a turbulent society and struggle to shape his fate, and that optimism and moral strength are the key factors in such a life. Young Heroes of Chaotic Time is an emotional ode to the dignity of the youth and the eternal spirit of the nation and makes a long-lasting impression of hope and the power of perseverance in the difficult times.
