Escape from the outland is a powerful survival drama putting the audience into a somber atmosphere of catastrophe, captivity, and survival. The novel is based around a foreign correspondent known as Ma Xiao, a committed yet wife Pan Wenjia, a caring volunteer doctor, and an engineer Miao Feng who are all caught in the wrong place after an extremist group decides to kidnap them on their way to do a routine repair. The movie is a good representation of their miserable life in the prison, highlighting the cruelty and unreliability of the surrounding world. In the midst of their hopelessness, they encounter Zhou Weijie, an overseas Chinese businessman, whose introduction provides richness and a sense of optimism to their hopeless state.
The beauty of the movie is that it is an uncivilized account of human resilience and unity in the worst of situations. Their changing relationships and the manner in which they cope with the situations also ensure the tension as the characters go through interrogation, brutal warfare, and confusion. The direction is skillful because of the way it combines scenes with extreme action and the ones that are more traditional and emotional, showing their inner strength and desperation. Cinematography creates a good capture of the bleak and unfriendly landscape and engulfs the audience into an environment where time is money and trust is not an asset. The score increases suspense and every escape attempt becomes urgent and carnal.
