“Memorist” Season 1 is an enthralling blend of supernatural intrigue and gritty crime-solving that keeps viewers hooked from start to finish. The series is about a dedicated detective named Dong Baek who unexpectedly has the superpower of reading people’s memory through touch. This paranormal power allows him to see through their minds, both the minds of suspects and the minds of witnesses. Armed with a relentless quest for criminals and justice, Dong Baek turns itself into an odd detective and goes down into the seedy underworld of society with determination and vulnerability. The plot takes an electrifying twist when a series of brutal serial murders surfaces, pushing Dong Baek to work with the sharpest and most gifted criminal profiler Han Sun-mi. They race against time together to expose the killer, and delve into layers of secrets and psychological trauma.
Characterisation is excellent, with Dong Baek’s own powers being his blessing and his curse, as he shows signs of past trauma and internal conflicts. Han Sun-mi is sharp, Dong Baek is raw with a strong determination but most importantly, Han Sun-mi and Dong Baek are very trustworthy each other and both are very willing to share the pain caused by their own failings. The story goes further into the case as the characters uncover the mysteries of memory, trauma, and redemption, uncovering the truth of the murders that is far more intimate than it seems. The direction and cinematography further add to the suspense, establishing tense, atmospheric scenes that convey a sense of urgency and emotional intensity. The score further adds to the ethereal atmosphere, enveloping the viewer in this dark and supernatural realm.
The human memory and the scars it leaves, were what was most interesting. The characters’ pasts are fraught with issues that connect with their current actions, prompting empathy and reflection. Evoking the spectrum of painful and precious memories, “Memorist” is a masterpiece that shows how the past affects and forms us. Overall, the series left me with a profound sense of the importance of knowing one’s past to be redeemed and have peace. A fascinating voyage into the human soul, supernatural elements and raw human emotion combine to create an unforgettable and thought-provoking thriller.
