Assault on Devil's Island - (review)

Assault on Devil’s Island is an action movie of high adrenaline and classic military rescue mission themes brought with a no frills and no jargon approach. The film is packed with suspense as led by Hulk Hogan’s commanding presence and the physicality of the characters, the narrative propels viewers into a fraught situation where a group of highly trained Navy SEALs is tasked with infiltrating into a heavily fortified island to rescue innocent hostages from ruthless drug lord soldiers.

But what really caught my eye was the film’s unabashed embrace of its B-movie roots – over-the-top action sequences, explosive set-pieces, and an easy-to-understand-to-the-point-of-good narrative. It’s a hard-boiled tone, at times tense, with the camaraderie of the SEAL team members helping to break up the tension. Its cinematography embodies the vibrant but perilous island scenery, making it all the more exciting with rich imagery and tactile camera movements in action shots. The pacing is dynamic and fast, so it never gets dull or boring.

The film is not subtle or complex, but it certainly doesn’t disappoint in providing pure and unadulterated action entertainment. The film’s simple narrative and Hogan’s charm ensure that it’s a captivating experience for both military thrillers and action enthusiasts. I was thoroughly impressed by “Assault on Devil’s Island” and it brought back the classic feeling of heroic rescues, when bravery and teamwork overcome chaos. This is an adrenaline rush, fun adventure without taking itself too seriously but with exactly what it offers.
