“Mortal Kombat” (2021) is a brutal, action-filled remake that brings the mythic world of the franchise back in with a new level of sinister, visceral storytelling. Cole Young, a MMA fighter who is not aware of his true heritage, is caught up in a fight with the dark forces of Outworld. With the help of the Elder God Raiden, Cole trains with Earth’s best warriors, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Jax, and Kung Lao, to prepare for the invasion. The movie strikes a balance between personal drama and grand-scale conflict, highlighting the themes of legacy, honour, and survival. As Cole’s power unlocks, the film escalates into superbly crafted martial arts scenes and ghostly encounters, both visually arresting and deeply affecting.
The cast is outstanding in portraying the characters with compelling performances, and Lewis Tan’s role of Cole is a relatable protagonist who is caught between worlds. The action scenes are a strong highlight, as the martial arts are well shot and the CG effects are amazing, vividly bringing to life characters’ supernatural abilities in a seamless and well-executed way. From the villains, Sub-Zero is a very powerful presence played with icy menace by Joe Taslim, while other characters such as Liu Kang and Sonya Blade are personifications of their respective icons. The moody lighting and edgy music adds to the brutality of the film, as it delivers a pounding beat that brings the viewers to an earthy world where every confrontation has stakes and impacts.
However, what really impressed them was the authenticity of the choreography for the fight scenes and honouring of the franchise’s mythology. It’s a fast-paced, brutal, and heroic take on Mortal Kombat with moments of character development. The storyline is simple, but the emotional intensity and high stakes of the action make for an electrifying ride. So, “Mortal Kombat” is a fresh take on the series, but also a pretty faithful one, that will propel the fans to more fights and more champions.
