Off Campus Season 1 is a romantic drama that is heartfelt and charming set in the boisterous environment of Briar University. The show, set around the improbable friendship and romance between witty and brilliant music pupil Hannah Wells and charismatic but womanising star hockey player Garrett Graham, delves into the complexities of growing up and falling in love. A complicated bubble of deceit begins when Hannah agrees to fake a relationship with Garrett, hoping to impress her crush Justin Kohl, and Garrett agrees to tutor Hannah in exchange for her love. The relationship starts as a flirty one but soon turns serious, revealing the intricate feelings and vulnerabilities behind their motives. The show’s tone is humorous and sincere, reflecting the bittersweet nature of young love and growing up mistakes.
The characters are believable; Hannah is quick and independent while Garrett is self-assured but insecure. Their chemistry is palpable and their developing relationship is true and relatable. Hannah’s best friend, Allie Hayes, and Garrett’s teammates also have subplots, which lend depth and dimension to the story, particularly in terms of the value of loyalty and camaraderie in surviving the chaos of college life. The series is well delivered and has good interaction for which it becomes a good series to experience the ups and downs of young love and young friendship. The university’s lively atmosphere and its well-crafted characters make it a welcoming and enriching experience for the audience to watch, as they can see how the people they are watching are much like themselves, and how they are learning about love and self-discovery.
What struck me most about this series was the realistic depiction of the tumultuous and unpredictable nature of adolescence, the ways in which love can be found in unexpected places, and the comfort and support that can be found in friendship. I loved the fluidity of the characters’ struggles and hopes, I felt hopeful and nostalgic for those formative years. It is a sweet reminder from “Off Campus” that sometimes, the most significant connections occur when we are least expecting them, and sometimes, it is necessary to be vulnerable to discover who we are. It’s a charming and wholesome series that celebrates the intricacies of love, and shows the spirited spark of youth.
