Ram Setu” is a mythological, scientific and action-packed film that takes a look at the origins of this legendary bridge through the eyes of an adventurous archaeologist, Dr. Aryan Kulshreshta, convincingly played by Akshay Kumar. A staunch atheist with scientific facts to back him up, Aryan is assigned to find out whether the Ram Setu is a natural formation or a structure built by Lord Rama. His finding of the bridge is prior to the life of the second Rama and could have been built at approximately 7000 years old, thus challenging his doubts and renewing his belief in the myth. It vividly portrays his underwater explorations, political maneuvering and attempts to establish the historical importance of Ram Setu, as well as his confrontation with the industrialists and corrupt officials wanting to destroy the monument for their economic benefit.
The film does a great job of immersing you, with some outstanding underwater scenes, tension and an interesting musical score. With help from other characters such as scientist Sandra and mysterious AP, Aryan finds evidence that connects Ram Setu to the Ramayana and Ravana’s Lanka, giving characters an emotional depth and helping him discover clues. The story tells about issues relating to faith and science, patriotism and the importance of cultural heritage. The story follows Aryan as he embarks on a quest to prove that the plans to destroy the bridge are wrongful, and eventually shows him a courtroom with irrefutable facts that proves it. The appearance of Lord Hanuman as AP brings a divine touch, highlighting the importance of faith and destiny.
As it is a story that is action packed and has a great visuals, there are times when “Ram Setu” resorts to the cliché plot and dialogue, which sometimes gets a bit preachy. There were some points on the plot and motives of some characters that could have been more developed to create a stronger impact. However, the movie managed to create a feeling of nationalism and curiosity for Indian ancient history to the viewers, which encouraged them to think about what lies ahead in their cultural heritage. In summary, “Ram Setu” is an intriguing blend of myth and contemporary adventure, evoking curiosity and nationalism, and leaving a memorable impact.
