An action-packed high-altitude martial arts thriller, “Wings of Dread” is an exhilarating atmospheric adventure that climbs 30,000 feet into the sky. The film follows Gu Chaoyang (Ashton Chen), a determined air marshal whose life is in danger after he is hijacked by a group of terrorist pilots on one of his flights to China. Led by a ruthless Uwais (Iko Uwais) the hijackers demand the release of a high-profile prisoner in exchange for not letting a bomb go off on the plane. Now, in a small, confining, claustrophobic plane, Gu must use his training, ingenuity and deadly fighting skills to save the passengers and crew from a catastrophic disaster. It’s simple, yet fast paced, with the action ratcheting up from the basics into some great close range battle play, that keeps the viewer on the edge of the seat all the time.
What’s really great about this movie is it seamlessly marries old school martial arts with modern action filmmaking, featuring the impressive martial ability of Ashton Chen and his choreographed fight scenes, which are both visceral and visually stunning. Each punch, kick and tactical move seems like it hits you right in the face with the confined space. Meanwhile, Iko Uwais, as the evil mastermind, brings a new layer of evil and cunning, making the terrorists a formidable foe. The script keeps the focus squarely on the main character’s moral resolve and tactical ingenuity and provides a hugely thrilling mix of suspense and action never dull.
