The Man from Toronto - (review)

The Man from Toronto is a chaotic, unpredictable, action-comedy that revels in comic misfortune. The scenario is wacky, hilarious and action-packed, given the misidentification of a clueless fitness instructor and a lethal killer. Despite being a very serious spy thriller, the film is a light-hearted affair with some good slapstick comedy and slick action scenes, keeping the tension high and the audience entertained. The pacing of the film is fast and moves from one ludicrous scene to another, but the comedic timing of the film, particularly the interactions between Kevin Hart’s Teddy and Woody Harrelson’s Randy, does provide some laughs amidst the chaos.

The performances are a highlight, featuring Kevin Hart’s signature comedic charm in his role as the clueless Teddy, who is totally out of his depth, yet somehow manages to stumble his way through a dangerous world. Randy is the one who brings a cool, no-nonsense vibe to the film, as compared to the panic of Teddy, played by Woody Harrelson. The supporting cast – from the bad guys to the agents – bring a level of caricatured menace and absurdity that further emphasizes the film’s over-the-top tone. Occasionally over-done, the action scenes are great fun and inventive, with ridiculous moments that are exciting, and a surprise ending that’s as chaotic as it is exciting.

The Man from Toronto is a whimsical popcorn movie, directed with a light sense of humor. Combining comedy, action and rather weird plot twists, it has viewers riding on a merry-go-round of laughs and adrenaline. But it’s not a serious movie, and it definitely gets you the escapism you’re looking for, a fun adventure to the extreme of misidentification and unlikely heroes and the random nature of chaos. The humor and frenetic action had me laughing out loud, and it was just a great choice for a fun movie night.
