Vishwanath and Sons is the story of celebrated international shooter Sanjay Vishwanath who has been inspired by discipline and ambition in his life. With age and family responsibilities starting to make his life more complicated, he crosses paths with a young and independent woman named Maddy, whom he grows closer to over the course of the film. As they get closer, an age gap poses a challenge to them, as does Maddy’s role as a mother to her son, Abhay.
Eventually, Maddy leaves to pursue her medical degree, not sure what it will turn into with Sanjay. During the next six years, she gets her medical degree, keeping up with Abhay. Regular visits are made possible with help from Sanjay’s cousin, who helps the mother and son become closer despite the distance. Maddy and Sanjay reunite when he graduates. He is very welcoming of her and later visits her in San Francisco, offering her a job in a hospital he is to set up in his mothers name.
The most gentle scenes in the film are when the focus is on the family, love and the prospect of starting over again. Sanjay and Maddy have a pleasant intimacy, although the question of their age difference hasn’t been sorted out and his smile doesn’t give any clarity about the future. The ending scene is a serene one, with Sanjay, Maddy and Abhay standing by a lake at the close of day, a quiet moment to reflect on the bond they have formed. The romantic arc’s trouble had the potential to be explored in a more thorough fashion, but the film is so tender that it poses a question here: where does ambition, love and family fit in one person?
