Blank Check is a wonderful 90s family film that embraces the magical fantasy of childhood with a sense of humor, adventure, and even emotional experiences. It is a story of an 11-year old boy by the name of Preston Waters who unintentionally ends up with an illegally acquired one million dollars following a bike accident. In his naivete and wildest fanciful imagination, Preston spends a storm of dollars to make himself a life of toys, gadgets, luxury, an adventure delightful in its way, and enchanting to watch. The light-hearted humor and the playful tone of the movie, make it an enjoyable viewing not only to the children but also to the adults who when watching the movie, feel like they are in the days of unlimited imagination and innocence of childhood.
It is also performed with warmth and humor in the story, in particular Brian Bonsall as Preston, firmly earnest and mischievous, which gives him a lovable lead character. The sinister yet, at the same time, comic villain portrayed by Miguel Ferrer as Carl Quigley is another aspect that brings a bit of tension to the film, and the surrounding cast, such as the FBI agent Shay and the family of Preston helps to bring the balance of family and honor to the center stage. The casual storyline that the direction brings to with its colorful and playful visuals and vibrant pacing makes the film enjoyable and exciting and the clever application of technology and humor reinforces the playful tone with which the film criticizes materialism and greed.
The most interesting message that the film left an impact on me was that money will not be able to purchase happiness or true relationships. It is also a lovely and significant process that Preston goes through to become someone who appreciates family and love rather than spending money carelessly. Although the premise of watching the movie, Blank Check, is over-the-top, it nevertheless provides a warm message by the end that true wealth is within the relationships we hold dear to us. It is a nostalgic, sentimental movie that makes you smile and think of what happiness is all about.
