Champion is a stirring underdog story that is a tempest of emotions, with the rich backdrop of the then India, before independence. The movie is about the life of a talented youth footballer, Michael Williams, a product of the streets of Secunderabad, who is in great need of a soccer break in the premier league in London. The film is a beautifully written story full of rich texture and the combination of the life goals of the main character as well as the grand scale of events in the life of the Indian independence movement in 1947 and the Bairanpally uprising is perfectly executed.
What is most powerful in the film is that it is able to strike a balance between the personal and the historical and it creates a personal and an epic story. The acting is excellent, and the main character gives a character of depth and vulnerability to Michael. Cinematography is also remarkable and reflects the color and texture of pre-independence India with exquisite detail.
What is really striking about Champion, though, is its emotional appeal. The movie gives you the heart strings, evoking a combination of emotions that will put you on the side of the underdog spirit in Michael. A lifting song with its positive message and with its grand representation of the human spirit, the movie is a success story that will ultimately have you.
