Morbius - (review)

“Morbius” is a dark and ambitious mix of horror and superhero action, focusing on the tragic transformation of Dr. Michael Morbius into a vampire. Jared Leto’s performance as Morbius is committed, reflecting the character’s struggle to find a cure for his rare blood disease, and the dilemmas he faces as he struggles with his newfound abilities and thirst for blood. It delves into identity, sacrifice, and the ethical complexities of playing god, but it can be hard to reconcile the typical Hollywood spectacle with the film’s emotional content.

On a visual level, “Morbius” offers some impressive moments, particularly in the portrayal of Morbius’s transformation and powers. The bleak, urban environment enhances the horror aspects and adds to the claustrophobic feel, emphasising the tragic irony of Morbius’s plight. The fight scenes are intense, but the pacing can be choppy at times, bogged down by expository scenes. The film’s supporting characters, such as Matt Smith’s Milo and Adria Arjona’s Martine, deliver strong performances that add to the tension and tragedy, especially in their respective storylines.

The film’s central themes of ethical science and the dangers of ambition are compelling, with the moral implications of experimentation and the tragic consequences of ambition at the forefront. Morbius’s conflict with his thirst for blood and tragic loss of family and friends garner empathy and reveal the tragedy of the hero. But the film’s complex narrative and use of CGI at times detracts from its emotional power. For all its shortcomings, “Morbius” is a melancholic and reflective film that adds an interesting dimension to the supernatural superhero genre.
