The Debt Collector - (review)

The Debt Collector is a dark and intense action drama exploring themes of morality, loyalty and survival. Scott Adkins is excellent as French, an ex-soldier and martial arts practitioner who finds himself in the middle of a violent debt collection and crime ring. His athleticism and realistic fight scenes are effectively used to establish a tense and gritty environment that draws the audience into the harsh world of street debt collection. The story delves into French’s moral dilemma as he struggles with the violence and intimidation required by his profession, weighing his need to earn money to repay debts and support his failing martial arts academy.

The film’s visual style is gritty and urban, focusing on the streets of Los Angeles while showcasing realistic and brutal martial arts scenes. The film’s tone is dark and almost philosophically nihilistic, with visual metaphors such as the slaughter of cattle, which symbolise the brutality of violence and the characters’ dire situation. The secondary characters, particularly Sue, enrich the narrative, representing trust and integrity. The narrative twists, especially when French and Sue discover the true identity of their boss and the moral implications of their actions, transform the action into a moral allegory about standing up for what is right in a world of moral decay.

The film’s portrayal of moral dilemmas and the sacrifices made for doing the right thing stood out. It raised questions for me about the blurred boundaries of good and evil and the costs of standing up against evil. The open ending, with its sense of hopelessness and despair, adds to the understanding of the harsh realities of their existence, and leaves a lasting impression of the ruthlessness required to survive on the margins of society. “The Debt Collector” is a gritty, action-packed drama that provokes us to think about morals in the midst of chaos.
