Berlin Season 02 - (review)

Overall, “Berlin Season 02: Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine” is a captivating follow-up to the Money Heist world, turning Berlin into the main character and an emotional focus for the entire season. The plot is about Berlin’s trip to Seville, where he plans an ambitious double heist of Leonardo da Vinci’s invaluable Lady with an Ermine. The plan is carefully orchestrated; Berlin guides his team through a complicated job that includes getting the painting and keeping the trust of the Duke of Málaga while also quietly eliminating his criminal empire by siphoning off his secret funds and art collection. The season skilfully combines suspense, strategy, and emotion, leaving the audience captivated by the careful play of each move.

This season is unique in that it looks at Berlin’s vulnerabilities and personal relationships. He has a surprise romance with a fiery street thief, Candela, adding depth and tenderness to his character, which is normally stoic. In between all the crew members are bubbling with internal conflict, notably Damián’s jealousy over Berlin and doubts about his leadership. The season also features some strong betrayals as Berlin schemes against the Duke’s Empire from the shadows and the Duke’s wife is an enemy of his own who digs against him in secret. These twists, alongside the high stakes of the deceptions, lead to a perfect heist that captivates and entertains the audience.

Tragedies add to the emotional theme of the season, such as the death of one of the crew’s members Cameron, a reminder that their criminal exploits come at a high cost. In the end, the Duke is broken and helpless due to Berlin’s manipulation and psychological agility, and Berlin finds love and peace with Candela. The season is not only visually spectacular, but also has a strong pace and a mix of action, romance and betrayal, with a final, poignant victory that leaves viewers to ponder notions of loyalty, sacrifice and what it means to be a member of a family. It’s an exciting, emotional tale that enriches the overarching story of the series.
