Bound - (review)

A provocative and intense look at empowerment, desire and the dark complexities of human sexuality, “Bound” is a provocative and intense exploration of empowerment, desire, and the dark complexities of human sexuality. This is about Michelle Mulan, a successful but frustrated, real estate broker in her forties, who has reached a fork in the road, both personally and professionally. She falls for Ryan Black, a charismatic younger man, and her world immediately begins to change when she is introduced to the world of BDSM – where his attempts to awaken her dormant sexual prowess bring about a different sort of shift. While navigating a new relationship, Michelle starts to shed her inhibitions and becomes more confident in her sexuality. The action of control and surrender is seamlessly woven throughout the narrative, uncovering how BDSM can be a metaphor for taking ownership of a life that is defined by desires that have remained unfulfilled and societal expectations that have not yet been met.

The storyline turns dark as Michelle discovers that her relationship with Ryan harbors some secrets: His criminal history and his grooming of her young daughter, Dara. The brutal portrayal of abuse, manipulation and eventual rebellion is followed by a confrontation with one’s own hidden history and a seemingly full takeover of control in the most literal way. Her journey from being a victim to a strong woman who puts her aggress in submissive has left an impact and is cathartic. The film’s gritty style and the extreme scenes of dominance, manipulation and violence reinforce the importance of boundaries, consent and personal strength. It poses questions to the viewers on the balance between liberation and exploitation, presenting it as a provocative psychological thriller.

The most powerful thing she said resonated with me was that Michelle was a woman who had been caged by society, and then she had become a woman who reclaims her power, and becomes a woman who now uses her trauma to her own strength. Her journey is a visceral reminder of the fact that sometimes you have to face the uncomfortable truths to find true empowerment and that “taking control” can be both rebellion and liberation. The movie evokes a sense of uneasiness, challenging the ideas of consent, trust, and the strength of the human spirit amidst the darkness. Daring, unsettling, yet inspiring, “Bound” is a tale of transformation in the face of adversity.
