The film is rich and sun-kissed, the Mediterranean scenery a reflection of Ry’s awakening and her summer of self-discovery. Maia Reficco gives a complex performance, closely mimicking Ry’s struggle with truthfulness and depth. Julián is the embodiment of Fernando Líndez’s charm and authenticity, a man of tradition, of freedom and of change. The screenplay alternates between affection and introspection, emphasizing the common struggle of man and woman to satisfy their own individual wants and needs while also trying to meet the expectations of the family. The music and cinematography add to the emotional resonance, capturing the beauty and fleeting nature of summer love.
What struck me the most in this film, was the idea of bravery: Ry leaving her medication behind for the purpose of experiencing her life, regardless of the risk. A heart-felt reminder to listen to one’s own heart, even if the road is not clear. The climax, filled with revelations and tough decisions, is for viewers to ponder the price of being happy and the fortitude needed to accept change. A heartfelt and beautifully shot exploration of living a true life, “The Last Sunrise” is a wonderful reminder of the ephemerality of summer and the timeless beauty of love.
