Season 2 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is a wonderful addition to the series, adding depth to its study of heroism, morality and political corruption. The season is about Aang’s journey of learning how to master earthbending, where he meets powerful characters such as King Bumi and the strong but fierce Toph Beifong, who push him towards becoming stronger and stronger physically and emotionally. The team gains another level of resilience and independence with Toph’s quest for self-acceptance as a blind prodigy. As the story unfolds, the Fire Nation’s evil agenda is executed and the cunning and dangerous Princess Azula becomes an antagonist who is shaping the fate of the world. The blackness of the season and its more complex nature, its character, makes it more powerful, more significant, every triumph and blow.
The political maneuvering in Ba Sing Se is one of the highlights with an old city that is so corrupt and controlled. The secret police, named Dai Li, brainwash citizens and lead the Earth King to believe that the war is not real. After a series of events that bring their treachery to light, the group is temporarily successful, but the season’s final episode shows just how devastating betrayal can be. Zuko’s internal conflict between his duties of honour and his familial obligations also brings an emotional nuance, particularly with his betrayal and ensuing conflict with Uncle Iroh. As the stakes get even higher in the “Crossroads of Destiny,” the fight for the soul of Ba Sing Se leads to Aang’s well-known Avatar State and the city’s collapse, leaving the fate of the world up in the air.
Season 2 is both visually beautiful and with lots of action and expression, it pervades both the eyes and the heart. Suspense and poignancy are built with the sound track, and empathy and reflection are created with the complex characters.
