Generation to Generation Season 1 is a great martial arts drama series which blends the issues of fate, loyalty and discovery of secrets that had been shrouded in the past. In essence, the show follows the life of a young girl with a big heart or Cai Zhao who has to become an uncommon name called a witch in this world where all that people notice is influence and ancestry. Thanks to her fate, she is taken to the Qingque Sect where she meets Chang Ning, who is an insecure survivor of the massacre of the family. Their friendship is unnatural as it is possible to survive in the strict order of the sect because both of them are concerned with life-threatening political intrigues and secrets in their history. It is an exceptional mixture of a traditional martial arts and a convoluted story of self-growth and mysterious origins.
The TV show succeeds in using complex characters that are trapped in the pit of dishonesty and rivalry. The avid temper and naivete of Cai Zhao is contrasted with the closed paranoia of Chang Ning and it creates an exciting dynamics that culminate to a delicate romance. Added to this dose of intrigue is Mu Qingyan, the smart young master, also investigating the history of his family, whose tact and his tactical instincts come to a head-to-head clash with the open mindedness of Cai Zhao. Flashbacks of allies and traitors make the situation even more serious, and the world of martials is depicted as it is and stakes are high when defending justice and truth. The chaotic universe is created by the aggressive martial arts choreography and the detailed production design of the show in a rather vivid manner.
The most notable was the way it depicted a feeling of survival and invincibility of bonds of war. The series meditates about the ungratefulness of heroism and faithfulness before mayhem and that the ultimate strength lies in confronting the fate and secrets with itself. The combination of action, romance, and intrigue is interesting and GenMe to GenMe makes the viewer wonder which twist in the story of martial heroism and self-exploration will occur next in this highly interwoven story.
