Mortal Engines is a visually spectacular and ambitious post-apocalyptic adventure that takes the viewer to a world in which the cities are mobile behemoths that scavenge and devour one another in order to survive. Overall, the film’s highly imaginative setting, with its towering, tech-forward cities and remnants of older technology, provides a strong dystopian backdrop that will captivate audiences. It’s about a violent, enigmatic young woman (Hester Shaw) who is determined on revenge, and an earnest historian’s apprentice (Tom Natsworthy) who finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy that leads to peril. Their unlikely cooperation in fighting a sinister city on wheels and a powerful superweapon, MEDUSA, is full of tension, action and moments of touching humanity in the midst of the chaos.
The movie deals with themes of revenge, redemption and the harmful effects of greed and war. Hester’s attempts to discover the truth behind her identity and to thwart the sinister schemes of Lord Mayor Magnus Crome and Valentine introduce an extra dimension of poignancy as they debate issues of loyalty and identity, along with moral decisions. It is a roller coaster of action, battle, and a race to save the world from a catastrophe, all in a climax culminating in a thrilling fight that is primarily about courage and sacrifice. The dynamics and dynamics of the characters, particularly that of Hester with Shrike and her ever-changing affection for Tom, are emotional undertones to the awesome action scenes. There were some pacing issues that I didn’t mind, but the film had a great momentum that didn’t let me walk away.
Captivating both visually and technologically, Mortal Engines features breathtaking production design and special effects that make this steampunk world come alive. The score heightens the atmosphere, in keeping with the film’s epic scale. The plot is sometimes dense and occasionally convoluted, but this inventive world and emotional center speaks to me. I found myself amazed and exhilarated by the film, and feeling both a sense of hope and a sense of renewal in a broken world and a sense of resilience. It’s an ambitious and creative journey, which will make the reader feel like he/she is part of a future that is influenced by the shadow of the past.
